Baja Great Whales Adventure

Blue, Gray and Humpback Whales

Background History of Whales

The warmer Mexican Baja waters are known to be the stomping grounds for the highest concentration of Migrating Whales in the world. They migrate down from the cold Arctic waters in order to find mates and give birth. Mating occurs in the warmer waters due to the newborns not having enough blubber to survive the colder waters. The Lagoons also provide protection against predators in the open oceans, however, nature is wild, and some do still find themselves in the Lagoons. In the past, the most ferocious predators of all, Humans, killed the most amount of Whales, with whaling in the US hitting its peak in the 1800s, and worldwide scientists believe that in the early 1900s more Whales were hunted than the past 4 centuries combined. Thankfully, since many species were put on the endangered list around 1970, the whales are now protected, although Countries in Asia like Japan have since lifted this ban for ‘scientific’ purposes. So it’s more important than ever to introduce and educate humans on the importance of Whales. Not only do they balance the natural food chain, but ecotourism helps feed local economies directly and indirectly.

  • The Blue Whale is the biggest animal to ever live on Earth. Ever. Even bigger than any Dinosaur to ever grace our Planet!! The biggest ever recorded was a whopping 29.9m (98ft) in length and weighing upto 200,000kg (200 tons). These gentle giants search the Krill rich waters of Loreto in search of food, giving us the perfect opportunity of meeting them. Loreto is one of the best places in the world for seeing the Blue Whales and is also home to many other large Mammals, we could also see Humpbacks, Fin Whales, Minke whales and pods of Dolphins.

  • Imagine… You’re in the boat, patiently waiting for your chance to see some of the most fun Whales, then, behind you, you hear a loud blowhole, you turn quickly and see the blowhole spray and the huge arched back of mother Humpback teaching her new calf the ways of the blue world. All of sudden her calf jumps it’s whole body out of the water with a huge breach and a loud cheer from everyone on the boat! Humpbacks are particularly fun because they are most commonly seen breeching, fin flapping, singing and showing off their tail flukes before a deep dive. The Baja waters in which we will be searching for Humpbacks are some of the most magical in the world and each day is a surprise. We have the chance to see lots of large mammals and pelagic fish.

  • Each Winter, in the Arctic circle, the Northern ice pushes South, forcing the Gray Whales to embark on the biggest Mammal migration in the world! Here in Bahia Magdalena is home to one of the most intimate wildlife experiences on earth, The Grey whale encounters in this area can only be described as life changing! Imagine leaning over the edge of the boat, looking eye to eye with a 20 ton gentle giant, only for the huge Gray Whale to place it’s head under your hand asking you to stroke its nose, just moments before it breathes and sprays you with its ‘delightful’ breath!
