freelance position: Nature guide

We are seeking a bilingual (English/Spanish) ocean guide to lead our wildlife encounters with energy, knowledge, and a deep respect for the ocean and its inhabitants. Please read EVERYTHING carefully before applying.

Requirements:

  • Language Proficiency: Strong level of both English and Spanish, with excellent communication skills to engage and educate guests as well as communicate with our only Spanish speaking local captains.

  • Work Permit: Must have a valid work permit to work in Mexico. If you don’t have one, but one of your goals is to obtain one so you can live and work here, you can talk to us about our internships. These are not paid positions, but we can work towards your permit and visa during the internship. You will need to have your Nom09 complete - if you don’t, then still apply and we can discuss how you can do it.

  • Emergency First Response training for Primary and Secondary Care: This requirement is ideal but not mandatory. The training or certification should be no older than 12 months. If you do not currently hold this certification, you may still apply for the position, provided you commit to completing the course within the first 3 months of employment.

  • Personality: We’re looking for someone fun, bubbly, energetic, empathetic, and eco-conscious. A personal approach to clients is what separates us from the other operators. Aside from that, you must have a passion for wildlife and sustainability, with a commitment to putting the animals first. The passion for the ocean and its conservation is a MUST in this position.

  • Work skills: A quick learner who can adapt to new challenges seamlessly. Must be punctual, reliable, able to clearly communicate with the team, and able to work up to our standards without constant supervision. We also value skills in photography and drone operation, as capturing the beauty of our encounters is key to what we do.

  • Ocean - boat - guiding skills: It is essential that the candidate has some experience in guiding, particularly in marine environments - Freediving training is highly valued. The candidate must be physically strong to swim in open ocean in all kind of conditions, and being able to assist the clients and keep them safe in the water when necessary. We work in small boats with one captain, you must have experience working on boats, and always understand that you must have initiative to assist the captain with boat logistics when he requests or is needed.

  • Availability: Able to guide tours on short notice in La Ventana (night before) so living in La Ventana is ideal!

  • Drivers Licence and local transport vehicle: You must have a valid driver's license to use our vehicle for transporting gear and other necessary items between the storage location and the tour meeting point. We also strongly recommend having your own mode of transportation within the area, as public transport in this small town is not very efficient.

Responsibilities in the role:

  • Meeting every morning in our HQ to collect the car, equipment and stuff to bring to the boat - this place may be distant from your home, that’s why we recommend to have your own vehicle for main transport - car, bicycle or moped would work as long as you don’t live outside La Ventana - El Sargento area.

  • Prepare the boat before clients arrive, greet them warmly, and provide a thorough briefing for the tour.

  • Guide and educate guests on the animals they encounter and the area—this is what sets us apart, so it’s super important!

  • Ensure the comfort and enjoyment of guests, offering drinks, snacks, and engaging conversation.

  • Be personable and make sure everyone is having a great time. Great customer service is needed for this type of job.

  • Coordinate with the remote staff, admin and manager the schedule and requirements for every trip on a daily basis. Important to have “WhatsApp”, and being able to receive calls when not on the boat if it’s necessary.

  • Coordinate and plan where to go during the tour with the captain, good decision making is key.

  • To help ensure the safety of our guests, basic first aid training is required.

  • After tour: Clean gear, food equipment and organise ready for the next day.

  • Upload photos and videos online ready to give to the guests the same day.

  • Upload stories from the day to social media.

  • Any other tasks requested by BWE.

Hours and frequency:

This position is on a freelance basis starting this October 2024, and while work hours may vary, we generally anticipate offering 4-6 days of work per week during the high seasons (May to June, November, February and March). However, this is an estimate and not a guarantee.

Day tours: Start at 6.30am and finish around 2.30pm. Some day tours such as the Gray Whales and the Pacific Offshore Exploration are longer due to further travel.

Compensation:

  • Day trips starting at $1,500 MXN pesos per day, plus tips.

  • If you excel in the role, you’ll have the opportunity to join our multi-day expeditions alongside Jamie, with better pay and greater responsibility.
