swim with whale sharks in mexico: 6 DAY SEAFARI EXPEDITION

Meet the Baja Whale Sharks

Each summer, hundreds of whale sharks migrate to Bahia de Los Angeles, a marine reserve located in the Sea of Cortez. With the largest ever recorded growing to 18.8m (61.7 ft) in length, these gentle giants are the largest fish in the world! Although here in Bahia de Los Angeles we generally only see juveniles, you can still feel dwarfed by their sheer size, and on lucky occasions, we can see some gigantic adults! Whale sharks are filter feeders with a preference for eating plankton, small fish and squid, and are no threat to humans. Whale Sharks feed by taking in huge gulps of water and filtering the food out for digestion. When we swim with whale sharks, sometimes, if you are lucky, you can see the whale sharks almost vertically gulping in large amounts of water and food.

Whale Sharks and Seafari Expedition Description

Think of a place so remote that there’s no mobile signal, now throw in some of the most biodiverse waters in the world with a mix of 5 of the largest whales in the world and a splash of Mexican culture and you arrive here in Bahia de Los Angeles! The fin whale is the most common and also the second largest whale growing up to 23m in length, second to the blue whale growing up to 30m. Both can be seen in these magical waters, along with humpback, sperm, Bryde’s and pilot whales. Dolphins and sea lions are also commonly seen as well as some lucky encounters with orcas. Of course, this is nature, so there are no guarantees, but that’s what makes this adventure so exciting, you never know what you will see and there are plenty of surprises!

And that’s even before we even talk about swimming with whale sharks! We generally see juveniles in the bay as they thrive in the warmer shallow waters of the bay in summer. On lucky occasions, we may see an adult, although they tend to stay in the deeper waters. Get ready for one of the best adventures of your life!
